Taos County is located in north central New Mexico on the western slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Taos County is also home to the Taos Pueblo Indians and several Spanish and Mexican Land Grants.
As of 2000, the population was 29,979
The highest point in the county is the summit of Wheeler Peak at 13,161 feet (4,011 m). This is also the highest point in the state of New Mexico.
